The PASSION project offers new photonic technologies for supporting agile metro networks, enabling capacities of Tb/s per channel, 100 Tb/s per link and Pb/s per node over increased transport distances providing at least a tenfold reduction in components energy consumption and footprint. The essential photonic building blocks have been developed including i) a novel 3D stacked modular transceiver that combines a silicon photonics (SiPh) circuit layer with directly modulated high-bandwidth 1550nm VCSELs light sources, ii) InP based coherent receiver arrays which handle polarization on chip making polarization handling off chip unnecessary and iii) a compact and cost-effective switching concept which can support the Pb/s capacities generated by the transceiver modules, using a combination of InP and SiPh PICs. Increased system flexibility and modularity is obtained by sliceable bandwidth/bitrate variable transceivers. The resulting solution offers scalability, programmability and re-configurability using agile aggregation in spectrum, polarization and space dimensions. PASSION technology has developed a new generation of high-capacity photonic devices and sub-systems, addressing the growing market of metro network scenarios. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No 780326 and it is an initiative of the Photonics Public Private Partnership.

KDDI Research plays the core of research, development and think tank of KDDI group.
Looking to the future beyond 2020, KDDI Research would like to strengthen and accelerate the creation of next-generation technologies and the enhancement of the ability to predict the future across the company, while promoting a seamless flow from research analysis to R&D. In order to provide customers with new value and experiences, we would like to continue the “Challenge for the Future” through such activities.
